Welcome to “Scales of Green,” a new website that will explore the dynamic world of environmental ratings in today’s world.  How “green” is a particular household product?  A particular company?  A particular country?  A particular individual, even?  Who gets to decide?  How is such “greenness” measured?  What exactly are the “Scales of Green,” and who holds them?

These are some of the questions I have been exploring over the past decade, first as an undergraduate, and then as an employee at a variety of different non-profit and for-profit organizations, and now as a PhD candidate at the University of California, Berkeley.  During my work at places such as The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Edison Electric Institute, and Resources for the Future, I have observed and participated in a range of efforts to measure environmental quality and performance, and am well-aware of both their strengths and weaknesses and their opportunities and challenges.  My dissertation focuses on the emergence and implications of such measures as a new form of market-based, information-driven governance, and I look forward to using this site to share what I am learning in my research.
